This year's 2007 Bankside Frost Fair, coordinated by Southwark Council and Better Bankside, will take place at Shakespeare's Globe on Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 December. This will mark the fifth year that the Globe has taken part in this free annual winter event held on Bankside. Last year the event attracted over 100,000 visitors enjoying the festive atmosphere along the Thames and perhaps finding that last minute Christmas gift!

Frost Fairs were a regular feature of winters at a time when Londoners took to the ice as the River Thames froze hundreds of years ago. This year the event celebrates 400 years since Bankside's first great Frost Fair of 1607-08.

A selection of traders from across the UK will sell unique hand-made gifts and demonstrate crafts. Family attractions include Elizabethan dressing and musical demonstrations in the newly re-imagined Globe Exhibition.

New to the 2007 Frost Fair, Shakespeare’s Globe has specially commissioned Permission to Play, a living installation by Ahh...Arts Igniting Minds’ Performance Laboratory.

This is a living installation featuring a cast of fifty performers and is inspired by the process of performance, the theatre, and Shakespeare. Starting in the Globe Theatre Exhibition the site-sympathetic promenade performance will culminate on the Globe stage. An exhibition of living performers, hidden theatre, playfulness, and bad behavior will be facilitated in an immersive environment where the threshold between performers and spectators is sometimes blurred.

Inspired by Shakespeare, in a series of encounters with the performers, you will discover subversive interventions aimed to delight and excite as well as gaining a deeper understanding of Shakespeare and the theatrical performance process. You will be gently empowered to participate in the theatre-making process and even, at times, have permission to play!
