A Day at Kew
In 2006 a summer trip was organised to visit beautiful Kew Gardens and Wakehurst Palace, where Friends were able to explore under the trusty and informative leadership of our voluntary guides. Highlights included the chance to wander through Waterlily House, a creation of rainforest conditions for a collection of weird and wonderful plants and a look round the ghostly rooms on the top floor of the Palace. The day was brought to a close with a scrumptious cream tea.
Visit to Stratford
Bright and early one morning in March 2007, a group of Friends embarked on a journey to Stratford for a day of Shakespearean culture and exploration of the town. Upon arrival to Stratford, a talk was held by the Chairman of the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust and its Head of Education, providing information behind their fascinating ‘Complete Works’ Exhibition. A leisurely lunch and a chance to wander along the River Avon followed. A trip round the exhibition at the Shakespeare Centre was next on the itinerary, which was followed by a visit to the garden and look-out of New Place where Shakespeare died. A private tour of Harvard House concluded the day’s activities, and ‘excellent’ refreshments enjoyed before the return home. “A very inspiring and thoroughly enjoyable day” – Ros Miskin.
Leeds Castle
An outing was organised in July 2007 for Friends to visit Leeds Castle and enjoy a matinee performance of Romeo and Juliet. The welcoming and well-informed staff at Leeds Castle conducted the tour around this special building. Refreshments followed the tour, then a walk over the drawbridge into the gardens, home to a variety of attractions such as the Aviary, Vineyard and Falconry. After the performance of Romeo and Juliet, Friends had the added privilege of meeting the performers over champagne and strawberries. As quoted by attendee Carol Malagoni; “I spent a magical day at your Leeds Castle event…it was absolutely lovely… We were treated like VIPs from the moment of arrival!”
Museum of London Costume Store Tour
A highly enjoyable sneak peek into the Museum of London’s Costume Store was enjoyed in November 2007 by numerous Friends of Shakespeare’s Globe. Curator of Fashion and Decorative Arts, Hilary Davidson and colleague Sue Clarke from the Museum’s Friends of Fashion guided the groups through the store which included a visit to the workshop where guests were shown how items were conserved to protect these precious articles. Guests were able to view some very unusual exhibits including an extensive collection of shoes which revealed to Friend Bob Barker’s surprise the extent to which ladies are prepared to suffer for fashion!
