It is six years since Michael Wood’s acclaimed TV series and book Searching for Shakespeare. In this talk, Michael will reflect on Shakespeare and Shakespeare biography and the on-going attempt to separate facts from fictions to provide new perspectives on the playwright and his plays.

‘Some Little Account of the Man': Nicholas Rowe's Shakespeare

Charles Nicholl is a historian, biographer and travel writer. His acclaimed books on Elizabethan theatre and literature include; The Reckoning: the Murder of Christopher Marlowe, A Cup of News: The Life of Thomas Nashe and Shakespeare and his Contemporaries. His recent book The Lodger: Shakespeare on Silver Street was described by James Shapiro as ‘among the finest books ever written about Shakespeare’s life’.
This year Charles Nicholl has contributed the introduction to a new edition of Nicholas Rowe’s The Life of Shakespeare in celebration of the 300th anniversary of the publication of the first formal biography of Shakespeare. In this talk Charles Nicholl will provide a personal perspective on Rowe’s biography.
