Shakespeare and Islam 2004

It was an honour for Shakespeare’s Globe to have been asked to help launch Islam Awareness Week (IAW) on 22 November within the 2004 autumn’s Shakespeare and Islam season. Globe Education contributed a series of events culminating in a souk celebrating Islamic arts and crafts presented in association with The Prince’s School of Traditional Arts and the Khayaal Theatre Company. The exterior walls of the Globe were illuminated with Peter Sanders’ photographic images of Islamic lands, architecture and peoples.

Over 20 speakers shared their knowledge and wisdom at the Globe including Dr Martin Lings as our International Shakespeare Globe Fellow, Shaykh Hamza Yusuf and Dr Ziauddin Sardar.

The 400th anniversary of the first recorded performance of Othello was marked with staged readings of four plays in which Moors of Turks appear, including a rare performance of the 1622 edition of Othello. Othello also featured, in both English and Arabic, in a series of workshops on the Globe stage for children with special educational needs.

The Shakespeare and Islam season ended in December 2004 but two outreach projects for schools across the UK continued in 2005.
