As the Footsbarn team continues to rehearse their Christmas Cracker in France I took the opportunity to find out what it was like for the Globe to host Footsbarn’s Shakespeare Party in 2008, especially we had never had a tight-rope walking Juliet above the audience before!
Footsbarn proved to be a jolly lot who proved that working could be as much fun as partying as they turned the Globe into their own magical world for the duration of their stay.
I spoke to Wills, the Globe’s technical manager, who recalled the event with a mixture of fondness and wonder at how it all came together in the end.
Wills For us the trickiest thing was installing the tightrope that Juliet walks across as we had never done anything like this before. As we tightened the rope the whole building seemed to groan! For the next two days it rained heavily but luckily the rope held strong and the Globe stayed up. Challenges like this make us think about the space in new and exciting ways and we learn things every time we have a different show.
So the Globe survived and the audience loved the show, hooray! After every performance Footsbarn’s director Paddy would lead the ensemble and the audience, like the Pied Piper of the Globe, to the Bar for post-show refreshments, refueling them for more merriment the next day.
